New Hope

New Hope is an eclectic town on the Delaware river, directly across from Lambertville on the New Jersey side. A popular weekend tourist destination, New Hope features a Main Street lined with unique small business shopping experiences. Visitors to New Hope enjoy browsing clothing and accessory boutiques, home decor, art galleries, novelty stores, antique vendors, and much more, along with award-winning restaurants, bakeries, and chocolatiers. New Hope Celebrates also hosts a pride parade and celebration every year that draws attendees from all over.

The Bucks County Playhouse features professional productions and live music, with the neighboring Logan Inn and Ghost Light Inn providing historic locations for overnight stays.

The canal walking path can be accessed right from town, so those staying the night can also enjoy walking the historic towpath (and if you want to do what the locals do, walk the towpath to Dilly’s).

Doylestown

Doylestown is an exciting small town, surrounded by suburbs and farmlands and accessible with a direct Regional Rail train line from Philadelphia right into Doylestown Train Station. An inn founded by William Doyle in the 18th century sparked the growth for the town, and Doylestown today is a mix of historical architecture and modern additions.

Doylestown is home to a great selection of coffee and tea shops, such as Nonno’s, Native Cafe and Skyroast Coffee. Another feature of Doylestown is that it has a vast selection of “niche” stores and vendors, including an antique clock and coin specialist, a camera shop, a running supply store, a comic shop, a record store and even an entire store dedicated to vintage video games, to name a few.

For some fascinating history, it’s hard to miss the Mercer Museum. Located inside the Fonthill Castle, the early 1900’s home of Henry Chapman Mercer who was a famous ceramicist, among other things. Today, the Mercer Museum is a showcase of pre-industrial American tools and equipment, and continues to showcase Mercer’s tilework.

Newtown

Founded by William Penn in 1684, Newtown has a wealth of history that is preserved today through the Newtown Historic Association. The walkable downtown area features a variety of restaurants, shops and historic inns, making it a great place for a overnight getaway and a show at the Newtown Theater. The town neighbors Tyler State Park, a beautiful 1.711 acre park hosting a variety of activities, including biking, hiking, horseback riding, and fishing, and plenty of areas for picnics and barbecues.

It’s a bit of a local secret, but Newtown is a wellness destination. The main downtown stretch features a concentration of hair and nail salons, traditional and medical spas, skin care experts, massage services, yoga studios and even a pink Himalayan salt cave. A perk — many of these services are within walking distance of each other.

Lastly, don’t get Newtown mixed up with Newtown Square! Newtown Square is also a great town, but it’s located on the West side of Philly in Delaware County. Since they are relatively close to one another they get mixed up often, and it occasionally leads to GPS misadventures.

Yardley

Yardley is a small borough located right along the Delaware river, across from Ewing on the New Jersey side. The downtown area is smaller than New Hope, Doylestown, and Newtown, but is still has a variety of places to shop and eat. Yardley is a great stop for cyclists, as you can park in town and ride on the Delaware Canal Towpath. Try riding to Washington Crossing and back, or even to New Hope for a longer trip.

Yardley has a lot of beautiful riverside properties, which most share the unique appearance of being raised up off the ground. Houses are lifted due to the frequent flooding from the Delaware river. While it’s a pain to climb all those stairs just to get to your front door, it’s well worth it to live in a raised house when you face the next big storm.

For those interested in history, make sure to stop at the Continental Tavern, as it served as a way station on the Underground Railroad. Historical artifacts that were discovered during it’s renovations are displayed throughout the tavern.

Peddler’s Village

Located in Lahaska PA, this charming village packs over 60 stores, along with restaurants, businesses and a historic hotel within beautifully landscaped grounds. Peddler’s Village is known for it’s festivals, particularly for hosting fruit-themed festivals throughout the growing seasons. It is also a very popular attraction during the holidays due to it’s impressive light displays and annual gingerbread house competition and exhibition.

The annual fall festival and scarecrow contest is also not to be missed, as some scarecrow makers return year after year and turn this children’s tradition into a serious art. One of the most popular events is the apple festival, as Peddler’s Village seems to have mastered creating the perfect cozy fall vibe with this event, and it draws visitors from all across the greater Philadelphia area.

One of the main attractions here is Giggleberry Fair, an indoor amusement center for young kids. It has a carousel, obstacle course, maze, game room and more, and has been a popular weekend trip for families since it’s opening.

The Mainline

The Philadelphia mainline is 16 communities, leading out from the city and into the Western Philly suburbs. Many of the mainline towns are known for beautiful homes and being more of a luxury real estate market. Bryn Mawr and Ardmore in particular have fantastic walkable downtown areas and make great suburban getaways from the city for shopping and eating.

The mainline is home to some amazing colleges and Universities, such as Haverford College, Bryn Mawr College, Villanova University and St Josephs University, to name just a few. Bryn Mawr College has a beautiful campus with historical gothic architecture, and is open to the public to walk the grounds. Haverford College also features a wonderful public nature trail for walking and running that is worth exploring during all seasons.

SEPTA’s Paoli/Thorndale Regional Rail line runs all the way through the Mainline, making back-and-forth travel between these suburban town and the city relatively easy. There are many people who live in the city and work on the Mainline (and vice-versa), so trains can be busy during rush hour with monthly pass commuters. Another way to reach the Mainline is by taking the SEPTA High Speed Line, as it cuts through Villanova as it makes it’s way to the end of the line in Norristown.

For those looking for a fun shopping day, check out Suburban Square in Ardmore. It hosts a selection of chain stores (Sephora, Urban Outfitters, West Elm…) alongside boutique selections (El Quetzal, Elizabeth Johns, Dandelion…). Dining options range from fast casual to some amazing restaurants. It has a year-round indoor farmer’s market, a brewery, and a Japanese grocery and marketplace. Ardmore is a favorite for Mainline and city residents alike.

Film lovers who find themselves on the Mainline should visit Bryn Mawr Film Institute, a non-profit movie theater that shows independent, international and alternative films. It also serves as an educational center, hosting speakers and presentations throughout the year.
